Haloperidol is an antipsychotic medicine that is used to treat schizophrenia. It works by helping to restore the balance of certain natural substances in the brain
It is used to treat:
- Mood disorders
- Uncontrolled movements and outbursts of words/sounds related to Tourette's syndrome
- Schizophrenia
- Allergic to haloperidol or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
- Are less aware of things around you or your reactions become unusually slow
- Have Parkinson’s disease
- Have a type of dementia called ‘Lewy body dementia’
- Have progressive supranuclear palsy
- Have a heart condition called ‘prolonged QT interval’, or any other problem with your heart rhythm
- Have heart failure or recently had a heart attack
- Have a low level of potassium in your blood
- Have dementia
- Suffering from heart disease
- Have low blood pressure, or feel dizzy upon sitting up or standing up
- Ever had bleeding in the brain
- Suffering from epilepsy or have ever had fits
- Have problems with your kidneys, liver or thyroid gland
- Have a high level of the hormone 'prolactin' in your blood, or cancer that may be caused by high prolactin levels
- Have a history of blood clots, or someone else in your family has a history of blood clots
- Suffering from depression or bipolar disorder
- This medicine is not recommended if you are pregnant or planning to have a baby. Ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
- This medicine is not recommended if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed as small amounts of the medicine may pass into the mother’s milk and on to the baby. Ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
- This medicine is not recommended for children below 6 years of age
- If you are elderly, particularly if you have dementia ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
- Drinking alcohol with this medicine may make you feel sleepy and less alert
- This medicines may cause you to feel sleepy and affect your alertness. If this happens, do not drive or operate any machinery

- Amiodarone, Dofetilide, Disopyramide, Dronedarone, Ibutilide, Quinidine and Sotalol
- Citalopram and Escitalopram
- Fluphenazine, Levomepromazine, Perphenazine, Pimozide, Prochlorperazine, Promazine, Sertindole, Thiorizadine, Trifluoperazine, Triflupromazine and Ziprasidone
- Azithromycin, Clarithromycin, Erythromycin, Levofloxacin, Moxifloxacin and Telithromycin
- Pentamidine
- Halofantrine
- Dolasetron
- Toremifene and Vandetanib
- Bepridil
- Alprazolam or Buspirone
- Duloxetine, Fluoxetine, Fluvoxamine, Nefazodone, Paroxetine, Sertraline, St John’s Wort or Venlafaxine
- Bupropion
- Carbamazepine, Phenobarbital or Phenytoin
- Rifampicin
- Itraconazole, Posaconazole or Voriconazole
- Ketoconazole tablets
- Indinavir, Ritonavir or Saquinavir
- Chlorpromazine or Promethazine
- Verapamil
- Diuretics
- Tranquillisers
- Strong pain killers
- Tricyclic antidepressants
- Guanethidine and Methyldopa
- Adrenaline
- Stimulants
- Levodopa
- Phenindione
- Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you
- This medicine is for oral use
- You can mix this medicine in some water before you take it, but don’t mix it with any other liquids
If you forget to take this medicine:
- If you forget to take a dose, take your next dose as usual. Then keep taking your medicine as your doctor has told you. Do not take a double dose
If you stop taking this medicine:
- Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, you should stop taking this medicine gradually. Stopping treatment suddenly may cause effects such as nausea and vomiting, difficulty sleeping
- Always follow your doctor’s instructions carefully

- Psychotic disorder, Depression
- Tardive dyskinesia, Akathisia, Bradykinesia, Dyskinesia, Dystonia, Hypokinesia, Hypertonia, Dizziness, Somnolence, Tremor
- Oculogyric crisis, Visual disturbance
- Hypotension, Orthostatic hypotension
- Vomiting, Nausea, Constipation, Dry mouth, Salivary hypersecretion
- Liver function test abnormal
- Rash
- Urinary retention
- Erectile dysfunction
- Weight increased, Weight decreased
- Leukopenia
- Hypersensitivity
- Confusional state, Loss of libido, Libido decreased, Restlessness
- Convulsion, Parkinsonism, Sedation, Muscle contractions involuntary
- Vision blurred
- Tachycardia
- Dyspnoea
- Hepatitis, Jaundice
- Photosensitivity reaction, Urticaria, Pruritus, Hyperhidrosis
- Torticollis, Muscle rigidity, Muscle spasms, Musculoskeletal stiffness
- Amenorrhoea, Galactorrhoea, Dysmenorrhoea, Breast pain, Breast discomfort
- Hyperthermia, Oedema, Gait disturbance
- Hyperprolactinaemia
- Neuroleptic malignant syndrome, Motor dysfunction, Nystagmus
- Bronchospasm
- Trimus, Muscle twitching
- Menorrhagia, Menstrual disorder, Sexual dysfunction
- Electrocardiogram QT prolonged
- Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children
- Do not use this medicine after the expiry date
- Once the bottle is opened, use within 3 months
- This medicine does not require any special storage conditions
