Salbutamol belongs to a class of drugs known as bronchodilators which is used to treat bronchospasm. It works by opening breathing passages and relaxing muscles in the airways and increasing air flow to the lungs
It is used to:
- Prevent and treat wheezing and shortness of breath caused by breathing problems such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- Prevent bronchospasm in patients with bronchitis, emphysema, and other lung diseases
- Allergic to salbutamol or the other ingredient of this medicine
- Have any diseases affecting the heart or blood vessels
- Have any infection in your lungs
- Have an overactivity of the thyroid gland
- Have low levels of potassium in your blood
- Have diabetes
- Hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, the Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption
- This medicine should not be used if you are pregnant or planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
- This medicine should not be used if you are breast-feeding or planning to breast-feed, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
- This medicine is not recommended for children aged below 4 years
- This medicine does not affect you ability to drive or operate any machinery. However if you feel dizzy or experience an increased or uneven heart rate, muscle cramps or muscle pain or feel shaky, then do not drive or operate any machines
Please inform your doctor in case you are taking any of the following medicines:
- Theophylline or Aminophylline
- Corticosteroids
- Propranolol
- Medicines for depression
- Water tablets like diuretics and other medicines for heart problems
- Always use this medicine exactly as your doctor or nurse has told you
If you forget to use this medicine:
- If you forget to use a dose do not worry. Take your next dose when it is due or if you become wheezy
- Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose
If you stop using this medicine:
- Before you stop using this medicine consult your doctor
- Palpitations
- Peripheral vasodilatation, and as a result small increase in heart rate
- Tremor
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Headache
- Hypokalaemia
- Hyperactivity, Restlessness, Dizziness
- Bronchospasm, Cough, Irritation of mouth and throat
- Muscle cramps
- Myocardial ischaemia
- Cardiac arrhythmias including Atrial fibrillation, Supraventricular tachycardia and Extrasystoles
- Keep this medicine out of reach of children
- Store at room temperature (15-25ºC)
- Do not use this medicine after the expiry date
