Doxycycline belongs to a group of medicines called tetracycline antibiotics which is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections, including those that cause acne, which works by stopping the growth of bacteria
It is used to treat:
- Wide variety of bacterial infections
- Malaria
- Allergic to doxycycline or any other antibiotic or any other ingredients of this medicines
- Are likely to be exposed to strong sunlight or ultraviolet light
- Have liver problems or are taking medicines which affect your liver
- Have severe kidney problems
- Have myasthenia gravis
- Have porphyria
- Have systemic lupus erythematosus (rash, fever, hair loss)
- Have diarrhoea
- If you are pregnant or planning to have a baby, ask your doctor before taking this medicine
- If you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine as it could harm the baby
- This medicine is not recommended for children under 8 years old
- Drinking alcohol is not recommended while taking this medicines as it may reduce the effect of this medicines
- This medicines may make you suffer from visual disturbancess such as blurring of vision. If this happens, do not drive or operate any machines
Please inform your doctor in case you are taking any of the following medicines:
- Penicillin antibiotics
- Rifampicin
- Warfarin
- Quinapril
- Kaolin
- Sucralfate
- Oral contraceptive
- Phenobarbital
- Ergotamine or Methysergide
- Typhoid vaccine
- Carbamazepine, Phenytoin, Primidone
- Ciclosporin
- Methoxyflurane
- Methotrexate
- Medicines such as antacids containing aluminium, calcium, magnesium or other medicines containing iron, bismuth or zinc salts
- Retinoids
- Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you
If you forget to take this medicine:
- If you forget to take this medicine take it as soon as you can. Take your next medicine at the right time
- Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose
If you stop taking this medicine:
- Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor tells you to do so
- Hypersensitivity reactions, Hypotension, Pericarditis, Angioedema, Angioneurotic oedema, Systemic lupus erythematosus, Dyspnoea, Serum sickness, Peripheral oedema, Tachycardia and Urticaria
- Headache
- Nausea, Vomiting
- Rashes including maculopapular and erythematous rashes, Exfoliative dermatitis, Erythema, Multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome and Toxic epidermal necrolysis
- Dyspepsia
- Vaginal infection
- Candida Infection
- Haemolytic anaemia, Thrombocytopenia, Neutropenia and Eosinophilia
- Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS), Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction
Discolouration of thyroid tissue /glands when given over prolonged periods
- Porphyria, Decreased appetite
- Tinnitus
- Flushing
- Pancreatitis, Glossitis, Staphylococcal enterocolitis, Pseudomembranous colitis, Clostridium difficile colitis, Inflammatory lesions (with monilial overgrowth) in the anogenital region
- Hepatic function abnormal, Hepatitis, Jaundice
- Hepatic failure
- Skin Hyperpigmentation
- Arthralgia and Myalgia
- Increased blood urea
- Keep this medicine out of reach of children
- Store at a room temperature of 15-25°C
