Oxcarbazepin belongs to a group of medicines called anticonvulsants or antiepileptics. It works by decreasing nerve impulses that cause seizures and pain.
It is used to treat:
- Seizure disorders (Epilepsy)
- Allergic to oxcarbazepine or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
- Allergic to carbamazepine
- Have liver problems
- Have kidney problems, especially kidney problems associated with a low level of sodium (salt) in your blood
- Have heart problems such as heart failure
- Have a heart rhythm disorder
- Have an intolerance to some sugars
- If you are pregnant or planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
- It is not recommended to take this medicine, if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed as the active subsatnaces may pass into breast milk. Ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
- This medicine is not recommended for children under 6 years
- Take special care if drinking alcohol while taking this medicine as it may make you feel very drowsy
- This medicine can cause side effects like dizziness, drowsiness, balance or co-ordination problems, eye problems including double or blurred vision, low levels of sodium in the blood which can cause muscle weakness, reduced levels of consciousness. If this happens do not drive or operate machines
Please inform your doctor in case you are taking any of the following medicines:
- Phenobarbital, Phenytoin, Carbamazepine, Lamotrigine and Valproic acid
- Hormonal contraceptives
- Phenelzine, Moclobemide
- Indometacin, Ibuprofen
- Medicines used to control the body’s immune system such as Ciclosporin, Tacrolimus
- Rifampicin
- Always take this medicine exactly as told by your doctor
- Take this medicine with or without food
- Swallow this medicine with a small amount of water
If you forget to take this medicine:
- If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose. Do not take more than your prescribed daily dose
If you stop taking this medicine:
- Do not stop taking this medicine without talking to your healthcare provider. this medicine suddenly can cause serious problems, including seizures that will not stop (status epilepticus)
- Somnolence, Headache, Dizziness
- Diplopia
- Vomiting, Nausea
- Fatigue
- Weight increased
- Hyponatraemia
- Agitation, Affect lability, Confusional state, Depression, Apathy
- Ataxia, Tremor, Nystagmus, Disturbance in attention, Amnesia
- Vertigo
- Diarrhea, Abdominal pain, Constipation
- Rash, Alopecia, Acne
- Asthenia
- Leucopenia
- Urticaria
- Hepatic enzymes increased, Blood alkaline phosphatase increased
- Thrombocytopenia
- Hypersensitivity
- Hyponatraemia associated with signs and symptoms such as Seizures, Encephalopathy, Depressed level of consciousness, Confusion
- Atrioventricular block, Arrhythmia
- Pancreatitis and/or Lipase and/or Amylase increase
- Hepatitis
- Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, Angioedema, Erythema multiforme
- Store at room temperature (15-25°C)
- Keep this medicine out of the reach of children
- Do not take this medicine after expiry date
