Methotrexate belongs to a class of drugs known as antimetabolites which is used to treat severe psoriasis and and certain forms of rheumatoid arthritis. It works by interfering and slowing or stopping the growth of certain cells in the body, especially those cells that reproduce quickly
It is used to treat:
- Active rheumatoid arthritis in adult patients
- Severe psoriatic arthritis in adult patients
- Certain types of cancer of the breast, skin, head and neck, or lung
- Are allergic to methotrexate or any other ingredient of this medicine
- Have significant liver disease
- Have significant kidney disease
- Have or have had a bone marrow disease or serious blood disorders
- Are allergic to Methotrexate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
- Have an impaired immune system
- Have severe acute or existing infections e.g Tuberculosis or HIV
- Have inflammation or ulcers in your mouth
- Have active phase gastrointestinal ulcers (e.g. peptic ulcer or ulcerative colitis)
- Suffer from diabetes mellitus and being treated with insulin
- Have received any vaccinations recently
- Have inactive, prolonged infections (e.g. Tuberculosis, Hepatitis B or C, Shingles [herpes zoster])
- Have had ulcerations in your stomach or bowel
- Are in poor general condition
- Have problems with lung function
- Are severely overweight
- Have abnormal accumulation of liquid in the abdomen or in the cavity between the lungs and chest wall (ascites, pleural effusions)
- Are dehydrated or suffer from conditions leading to dehydration (e.g. Dehydration as a result of vomiting, Diarrhoea or Inflammation of the mouth and lips)
- This medicine is not recommended if you are pregnant or planning to have a baby as it can cause birth defects, harm the unborn child or cause miscarriages. Ask your doctor for advise before taking this medicine
- This medicine is not recommended if you are breast feeding or planning to breast feed as it passes into breast milk. Ask your doctor for advise before taking this medicine
- Alcohol is not recommended while taking this medicine
- This medicine may make you feel fatigue and dizziness. If this happens, do not drive or operate any machinery
Please inform your doctor in case you are taking any of the following medicines:
- Penicillins, Glycopeptides, Ciprofloxacin, Cefalotin, Sulfonamides, Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole, Tetracycline and Chloramphenicol
- Sulfasalazine and Leflunomide
- Doxorubicin, Cisplatin, Mercaptopurine
- Phenytoin, or Levetiracetam
- Cholestyramine
- Diclofenac and Ibuprofen, Aspirin, Metamizole
- Omeprazole or Pantoprazole
- Diuretics, Triamterene
- Metformin
- Probenecid
- Theophylline
- Cyclosporine
- Barbiturates
- Tranquillisers
- Oral contraceptives
- Azathioprine, Leflunomide, Sulphasalazine, Phenylbutazone, or Amidopyrine
- Retinoids
- Pyrimethamine
- Vitamin preparations containing folic acid
- Any vaccination with a live vaccine (must be avoided), such as Measles, mumps, Influenza or Yellow fever vaccines
- Always take these tablets exactly as your doctor has told you
- The tablets should be swallowed whole with a drink of water while sitting upright or standing
If you forget to use this medicine:
- Take it as soon as possible
- Do not double the dose
If you stop using this medicine:
- Do not stop taking this medicine without your doctor’s advice
- Stomatitis, Dyspepsia, Anorexia, Nausea,Vomiting, Abdominal pain
- Abnormal liver function tests
- Infections
- Leucopenia
- Headache, Drowsiness, Dizziness, Fatigue
- Oral ulcers, Diarrhoea
- Erythematous rash, Alopaecia, Exanthema
- Opportunistic infections
- Lymphoma
- Bone marrow depression, Agranulocytosis, Thrombocytopenia, Anaemia, Hematopoietic disorders
- Anaphylactic-type reaction
- Vertigo
- Pneumonia, Interstitial pneumonitis, Interstitial/ pulmonary fibrosis
- Decrease in serum albumin, Fatty degeneration of the liver
- Pruritus, Stevens-Johnson´s syndrome, Toxic epidermal necrolysis, Herpetiform eruptions of the skin, Increased skin pigmentation
- Osteoporosis, Arthralgia, Myalgia, Increased rheumatic nodules
- Renal insufficiency, Nephropathy, Inflammation and ulceration of the urinary bladder, Disturbed micturition, Dysuria
- Vaginal inflammation and ulceration
- Chills
- Herpes zoster, Sepsis
- Megaloblastic anemia
- Diabetes mellitus
- Depression, Confusion, Mood alterations
- Hemiparesis, Paresis
- Pericarditis, Pericardial effusion, Pericardial tamponade
- Hypotension, Thromboembolism
- Dyspnoea, Pharyngitis, Respiratory paralysis
- Gingivitis, Gastrointestinal ulcerations and haemorrhage, Enteritis, Melaena
- Hepatotoxicity, Periportal fibrosis,Liver cirrhosis, Acute hepatitis
- Photohypersensitivity, Acne, Depigmentation, Urticaria, Erythema multiforme, Painful damage to psoriatic lesion, Skin ulceration, Onycholysis, Increased nail pigment changes, Petechiae, Allergic vasculitis, Radiation dermatitis and sunburn may be “recalled”
- Stress fracture
- Oliguria, Anuria, Electrolyte disturbances, Azotaemia
- Decreased libido, Impotence, Menstrual disorders
- Fever, Wound-healing impairmen, Asthenia
- Hypogammag-lobulinaemia, Lympho-proliferative disorders, Lymphadeno-pathy, Neutropenia, Aplastic anemia
- Immuno-suppression
- Insomnia, Psychoses
- Irritation, Dysarthria, Aphasia, Lethargy, Cerebral oedema, Transient subtle cognitive dysfunction, Unusual cranial sensation, Convulsions, Pain, muscular asthenia or paraesthesia in the extremities, Changes in sense of taste (metallic taste), Meningism, Acute aseptic meningitis, Paralysis
- Conjunctivitis, Blurred vision
- Tinnitus
- Vasculitis
- Pneumocystis jiroveci – pneumonia and other lung infections, Chronic interstitial obstructive lung disease, Pleuritis, Pleural effusion, Dry cough
- Haematemesis
- Reactivation of chronic hepatitis, Hepatic failure
- Telangiectasis, Furunculosis, Ecchymoses, Hidradenitis, Acute paronchynia
- Haematuria
- Formation of defective oocytes or sperm cells, Transient oligospermia, Infertility, Vaginal bleeding, Vaginal discharge, Gynaecomastia
- Keep out of the reach and sight of children
- This medicine must not be used after the expiry date
- Store at room temperature (15-25°C)
