Olanzapine belongs to a class of drugs called atypical antipsychotics. It works by helping to restore the balance of certain natural substances in the brain. It decreases hallucinations and help you to think more clearly and positively about yourself, feel less agitated, and take a more active part in everyday life.
It is used to treat:
- Mental/mood conditions (such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder)
- Depression (in combination with other medicines)
- Allergy to olanzapine or any of the other ingredients in this medicine
- Previously been diagnosed with eye problems such as certain kinds of glaucoma
- Suffer from Stroke or “mini” stroke
- Suffer from Parkinson’s disease
- Have a history of Prostate problems
- A blocked intestine
- Suffer from Liver or kidney disease
- Suffer from Blood disorders
- History of Heart disease
- History of Diabetes
- Suffer from Seizures
- Ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine in case you are pregnant or plan to be pregnant
- This medicine is not recommended when breast-feeding, as small amounts of olanzapine tablets can pass into breast milk.
- Not recommended for children and adolescents under 18 years
- Not recommended if you are suffering from dementia and have had a stroke in the past
- Avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medicine as it may make you feel drowsy
- Do not drive or operate any tools or machines if you feel drowsy when taking this medicine
Please inform your doctor in case you are taking any of the following medicines:
- Metoclopramide
- Codeine, Hydrocodone
- Alprazolam, Lorazepam, Zolpidem
- Carisoprodol, Cyclobenzaprine
- Cetirizine, Diphenhydramine
- Take this tablet exactly as your doctor tells you to take it
- Your doctor will tell you how much of this medicine to take and when to take it
- Do not take more than your doctor has recommended
If you forget to take this medicine:
- If you miss a dose, take the next dose as usual - do not double the dose
If you stop taking this medicine:
- Do not stop taking the medicine without talking to your doctor
- Weight gain
- Somnolence
- Orthostatic hypotension
- Elevated plasma prolactin levels
- Eosinophilia, Leukopenia, Neutropenia
- Elevated cholesterol levels, Elevated glucose levels, Elevated triglyceride levels, Glucosuria, Increased appetite
- Dizziness, Akathisia, Parkinsonism, Dyskinesia
- Mild, Transient anticholinergic effects including Constipation and Dry mouth
- Transient, Asymptomatic elevations of hepatic aminotransferases (ALT, AST), especially in early treatment
- Rash
- Arthralgia
- Erectile dysfunction in males, Decreased libido in males and females
- Asthenia, Fatigue, Oedema, Pyrexia
- Increased alkaline phosphatase, High creatine phosphokinase, High Gamma Glutamyltransferase , High Uric Acid
- Hypersensitivity
- Development or Exacerbation of diabetes occasionally associated with Ketoacidosis or Coma
- Seizures, Dystonia (including oculogyration), Tardive dyskinesia , Amnesia, Restless legs syndrome, Dysarthria
- Bradycardia, QTc prolongation
- Thromboembolism (including pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis)
- Epistaxis
- Abdominal distension
- Photosensitivity reaction, Alopecia
- Urinary incontinence, Urinary retention, Urinary hesitation
- Amenorrhea, Breast enlargement, Galactorrhea in females, Gynaecomastia/Breast enlargement in males
- Increased total bilirubin
- Thrombocytopenia
- Hypothermia
- Neuroleptic malignant syndrome, Discontinuation symptoms
- Ventricular tachycardia/Fibrillation, Sudden death
- Pancreatitis
- Hepatitis (including hepatocellular, cholestatic or mixed liver injury)
- Rhabdomyolysis
- Priapism
- Store at room temperature (15 to 25ºC)
- Keep it out of reach of children
- Do not use after expiry date
