Esomeprazole Magnesium belongs to a group of medicines called ‘proton pump inhibitors’. They work by reducing the amount of acid that your stomach produces. It relieves symptoms such as heartburn, difficulty swallowing, and persistent cough.
It is used to treat:
- Symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Excessive stomach acid (Zollinger-Ellison syndrome)
It is used to promote healing of:
- Erosive esophagitis
It is used to prevent:
- Gastric ulcer caused by infection
- Allergy to esomeprazole magnesium or any of the other ingredients in this medicine
- If you have severe kidney problems
- If you have ever had a skin reaction after treatment with a medicine that reduces stomach acid
- If you are due to have a specific blood test (Chromogranin A)
- Ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine in case you are pregnant or plan to be pregnant
- This medicine is not recommended if you are breast-feeding or planning to breastfeed
- For children and adoloscents below the age of 12, the medicine is provided in sachet form

- Clopidogrel
- Ketoconazole, Itraconazole, Voriconazole
- Erlotinib
- Citalopram, Imipramine, Clomipramine
- Diazepam
- Phenytoin
- Warfarin
- Cilostazol
- Cisapride
- Digoxin
- Methotrexate
- Tacrolimus
- Rifampicin
- St. John’s Wort
- Take this tablet exactly as your doctor tells you to take it
- Your doctor will tell you how much of this medicine to take and when to take it
- Do not take more than your doctor has recommended
- Swallow the medicine with a glass of water
- Do not chew or crush this medicine
If you forget to take this medicine:
- If you miss a dose, take the next dose as usual - do not double the dose
If you stop taking this medicine:
- Do not stop taking the medicine without talking to your doctor
- Headache
- Abdominal pain, Constipation, Diarrhea, Flatulence, Nausea/vomiting, Fundic gland polyps (benign)
- Peripheral oedema
- Insomnia
- Dizziness, Paraesthesia, Somnolence
- Vertigo
- Dry mouth
- Increased liver enzymes
- Dermatitis, Pruritus, Rash, Urticaria
- Fracture of the hip, wrist or spine
- Leukopenia, thrombocytopenia
- Angioedema and Anaphylactic reaction/shock
- Hyponatraemia
- Agitation, Confusion, Depression
- Taste disturbance
- Blurred vision
- Bronchospasm
- Stomatitis, Gastrointestinal candidiasis
- Hepatitis with or without jaundice
- Alopecia, Photosensitivity
- Arthralgia, Myalgia
- Malaise, Increased sweating
- Agranulocytosis, Pancytopenia
- Aggression, Hallucinations
- Hepatic failure, in patients with pre-existing liver disease
- Erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, Toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN)
- Muscular weakness
- Interstitial nephritis
- Gynaecomastia
- Keep out of the sight and reach of children
- Do not use this medicine after the expiry date
- Do not store above 25°C
