Losartan Potassium belongs to a group of drugs called angiotensin receptor blockers. It keeps blood vessels from narrowing, which lowers blood pressure and improves blood flow
It is used to:
- Treat high Blood Pressure
- Slow long-term kidney damage in people with type 2 diabetes
- Allergy to losartan potassium or any of the other ingredients in this medicine
- Have diabetes
- History of angioedema
- Suffer from excessive vomiting or diarrhoea leading to an extreme loss of fluid and/or salt in your body
- Liver function is impaired
- Known to have a narrowing or blockage of the blood vessels leading to your kidneys or have received a kidney transplant recently
- Suffer from heart failure with or without renal impairment or concomitant severe life threatening cardiac arrhythmias
- Have problems with your heart valves or heart muscle
- Suffer from coronary heart disease or from cerebrovascular disease
- Suffer from primary hyperaldosteronism
- This medicine is not recommended in early pregnancy, and must not be taken when more than 3 months pregnant. Ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
- This medicine is not you are breast-feeding or planning to breastfeed. Ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
- This medicine is not recommended for children under 6 years old
- Ask your doctor for advise if you are over the age of 75 years
- This medicine is unlikely to affect your ability to drive or use machines. However if it causes dizziness you should ask your doctor for advice before attempting such activities
Please inform your doctor in case you are taking any of the following medicines:
- Aliskiren
- Lithium
- Benazepril, Lisinopril
- Drospirenone
- Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you
- It can be taken with or without food
If you forget to take this medicine:
- If you forget to take a dose, skip the missed dose. Take the next dose as usual. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose
If you stop taking this medicine:
- Do not stop taking your medicine unless your doctor has told you to do so
- Dizziness
- Hypoglycaemia, Hyperkalaemia
- Anaemia
- Increase in blood urea, serum creatinine and serum
- Renal impairment, Renal failure
- Vertigo
- Asthenia, Fatigue
- Somnolence, Headache, Sleep disorders
- Palpitations, Angina pectoris
- Dyspnoea, Cough
- Abdominal pain, Obstipation, Diarrhoea, Nausea, Vomiting
- Urticaria, Pruritus, Rash
- Oedema
- Hypersensitivity reactions, Anaphylactic reactions, Angioedema and Vasculitis
- Paraesthesia
- Syncope, atrial fibrillation, Cerebrovascular accident
- Hepatitis
- Increased alanine aminotransferase (ALT)
- Store at room temperature (15-25°C)
- Keep in a tightly closed container that protects the medicine from light
- Do not use this medicine after the expiry date
- Keep the medicines out of the reach of children
