Acetazolamide belongs to a group of medicines known as carbonic anhydrase inhibitors which is used to treat or prevent altitude sickness. It works by reducing the activity of a protein in the body called carbonic anhydrase and reduces the buildup of certain fluids in the body
It is used to :
- Prevent and reduce the symptoms of altitude sickness
- Abnormal retention of fluids
- Glaucoma
- Epilepsy
- Allergic to sulphonamides, sulphonamide derivatives including acetazolamide or to any of the ingredients in the medicine
- Suffer from severe liver problems
- Have or have ever had severe kidney problems
- Have a particular type of glaucoma known as chronic non congestive angle closure glaucoma
- Have reduced function of the adrenal glands – glands above the kidneys
- Have low blood levels of sodium and/or potassium or high blood levels of chlorine
- Suffer from lung problems such as chronic bronchitis or emphysema, which cause difficulty in breathing
- This medicine is not recommended if you are pregnant, think you are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant. Ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
- This medicine may be taken when breast feeding but only after the consultation with your doctor regarding its use
- If you are above the age of 65, it is recommended to consult with the doctor before taking this medicine
- This medicine may make you feel drowsy or confused or cause short-sightedness. If this happens to you, do not drive or operate a machinery
Please inform your doctor in case you are taking any of the following medicines:
- Digoxin
- Medicines to reduce blood pressure
- Warfarin
- Metformin, Gliclazide
- Phenytoin, Primidone, Carbamazepine, Topiramate
- Methotrexate, Pyrimethamine, Trimethoprim
- Prednisolone
- Salicylic acid, Choline salicylate
- Dorzolamide, Brinzolamide
- Amphetamines, Quinidine, Methenamine, Lithium
- Sodium bicarbonate therapy
- Ciclosporin
- Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you
- It should be swallowed whole with a drink of water, just before or just after a meal
- Do not chew or crush the tablets
If you forget to take this medicine:
- Take it as soon as you remember
- However, if this is within two hours of your next dose you should skip the missed tablet and carry on taking the rest of your tablets as usual
- Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose
- Do not store above 25°C
- Store in the original pack or in containers which prevents the access of moisture
- Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children
- Do not use this medicine after the expiry date
- Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste
