Glimepiride belongs to the class of drugs known as sulfonylureas. It lowers blood sugar by causing the release of your body's natural insulin. It works by increasing the amount of insulin released from your pancreas, which then lowers your blood sugar levels
It is used to control:
- High blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes in combination with a proper diet and exercise program
- Allergy to glimepiride or any of the other ingredients in this medicine
- Have insulin dependent diabetes (type 1 diabetes mellitus)
- Have diabetic ketoacidosis
- Have severe kidney disease
- Have a severe liver disease
- Recovering from an injury, operation, infections with fever, or From other forms of stress
- This medicine is not recommeded in case you are pregnant or plan to be pregnant. Ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
- This medicine is not recommeded if you are breast-feeding or planning to breastfeed. Ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine as it may pass into human breast milk
- Not recommended for children and adolescents under 18 years
- Alcohol intake may increase or decrease the blood sugar lowering action of this medicine
- Your ability to concentrate or react maybe reduced when your blood sugar level is reduced, so one should be cautious when driving a car or using machines
Please inform your doctor in case you are taking any of the following medicines:
- Metroprolol, Propanolol
- Timolol
- Insulin or Metformin
- Always take this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor has told you
- Swallow the medicine whole with at least half glass of water
- Do not crush or chew the tablets
If you forget to take this medicine:
- If you forget to take a dose, do not take a double dose to make up for forgotten doses
If you stop taking this medicine:
- If you interrupt or stop the treatment you should be aware that the desired blood sugar lowering effect is not achieved or that the disease will get worse again. Keep taking this medicine until your doctor tells you to stop
- Thrombocytopenia, Leukopenia, Granulocytopenia, Agranulocytosis, Erythropenia, Haemolytic anaemia and Pancytopenia, which are in general reversible upon discontinuation of medication
- Hypoglycaemia
- Leukocytoclastic vasculitis, Mild hypersensitivity reactions that may develop into serious reactions with dyspnoea, Fall in blood pressure and Sometimes shock
- Nausea, Vomiting, Diarrhoea, Abdominal distension, Abdominal discomfort and Abdominal pain, which seldom lead to discontinuation of therapy
- Hepatic function abnormal (e.g. with Cholestasis and Jaundice), Hepatitis and Hepatic failure
- Blood sodium decrease
- Store at room temperature (15 to 25ºC)
- Keep it out of reach of children
- Do not use after expiry date
