Febuxostat reduces the production of uric acid in your body which can cause gout symptoms. It should be used only when treatment with a medication called allopurinol does not work in lowering your uric acid level or causes serious side effects
It is used to lower:
- Uric acid levels in people with gout
- Allergy to febuxostat or any of the other ingredients in this medicine
- Have or have had heart failure, heart problems or an episode of stroke
- Have or have had renal disease and/or Serious allergic reaction to allopurinol
- Have or have had liver disease or liver function test abnormalities
- Treated for high uric acid levels as a result of Lesch-Nyhan syndrome
- Suffering from thyroid problems
- This medicine is not recommeded in case you are pregnant or plan to be pregnant. Ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
- This medicine is not recommeded if you are breast-feeding or planning to breastfeed.Ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
- This medicine is not recommended to children under the age of 18
- You may experience dizziness, sleepiness, blurred vision and numbness or tingling sensation when taking this medicine. If this happens do not drive or operate machines
Please inform your doctor in case you are taking any of the following medicines:
- Azathioprine
- Mercaptopurine
- Take this tablet exactly as your doctor tells you to take it
- Your doctor will tell you how much of this medicine to take and when to take it
- Do not take more than your doctor has recommended
- It should be taken by mouth and can be taken with or without food
If you forget to take this medicine:
- Take it as soon as you remember
- If you miss a dose, take the next dose as usual - do not double the dose
If you stop taking this medicine:
- Do not stop taking the medicine without talking to your doctor
- Gout flares
- Headache
- Diarrhoea, Nausea
- Liver function abnormalities
- Rash
- Oedema
- Blood thyroid stimulating hormone increased
- Diabetes mellitus, Hyperlipidemia, Decrease appetite, Weight increase
- Libido decreased, Insomnia
- Dizziness, Paraesthesia, Hemiparesis, Somnolence, Altered taste, Hypoaesthesia, Hyposmia
- Atrial fibrillation, Palpitations, ECG abnormal
- Hypertension, Flushing, Hot flush
- Dyspnoea, Bronchitis, Upper respiratory tract infection, Cough
- Abdominal pain, Abdominal distension, Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, Vomiting, Dry mouth, Dyspepsia, Constipation, Frequent stools, Flatulence, Gastrointestinal discomfort
