Empagliflozin is an oral diabetes medicine that helps control blood sugar levels. Empagliflozin works by helping the kidneys get rid of glucose from your bloodstream.
It is used to:
- Control high blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes in combination with a proper diet and exercise program
- Lower the risk of death from heart attack, stroke, or heart failure in adults with type 2 diabetes who also have heart disease
- Allergy to empagliflozin or any of the other ingredients in this medicine
- Have “type 1 diabetes”
- Suffer from diabetic ketoacidosis
- Have serious kidney or liver problems
- Suffer from dehydration
- Have a serious infection of the kidney or the urinary tract with fever
- This medicine is not recommeded in case you are pregnant or plan to be pregnant. Ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
- This medicine is not recommeded if you are breast-feeding or planning to breastfeed. Ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine as it is not known if it passes into human breast milk
- Not recommended for children and adolescents under 18 years
- This medicines is not recommended if you are 85 years old or older
- This medicine has minor influence on the ability to drive and use machines and may cause dizziness. If this happens then do not drive or use any machines
Please inform your doctor in case you are taking any of the following medicines:
- Metroprolol, Propanolol, Timolol
- Insulin
- Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you
- Swallow the tablet whole with water
- You can take the tablet with or without food
If you forget to take this medicine:
- If it is 12 hours or more until your next dose, take the medicine as soon as you remember. Then take your next dose at the usual time
- If it is less than 12 hours until your next dose, skip the missed dose. Then take your next dose at the usual time
- Do not take a double dose of this medicine to make up for a forgotten dose
If you stop taking this medicine:
- Do not stop taking this medicine without first consulting your doctor
- Your blood sugar levels may increase when you stop taking this medicine
- Hypoglycaemia (when used with sulphonylurea or insulin)
- Vaginal moniliasis, Vulvovaginitis, Balanitis and Other genital infection, Urinary tract infection (including pyelonephritis and urosepsis)
- Thirst
- Pruritus (generalised), Rash
- Increased urination
- Serum lipids increased
- Urticaria
- Volume depletion
- Dysuria
- Blood creatinine increased/ Glomerular filtration rate decreased, Haematocrit increased
- Store at room temperature (15 to 25ºC)
- Keep it out of reach of children
- Do not use after expiry date
