Fluoxetine belongs to a group of medicines called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressants which is used to treat depression and anxiety disorders. It work by helping to restore the balance of certain natural substances in the brain.
It is used to treat:
- Major depressive disorders (Eating disorder, Obsessive-compulsive disorder, Panic disorder, Premenstrual dysphoric disorder)
- Allergic to fluoxetine or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
- Suffer from the so-called “serotonin syndrome” or “neuroleptic malignant syndrome”
- Suffer from Mania
- Have a history of bleeding disorders or appearance of bruises or unusual bleeding
- Suffer from Epilepsy
- Have ongoing ECT
- Starting to feel restless and cannot sit or stand still (akathisia)
- Have Diabetes
- Suffer from liver problems
- Have low resting heart-rate
- Have salt depletion as a result of prolonged severe diarrhoea and vomiting
- Have glaucoma
- It is preferable not to use this medicine during pregnancy. If you are pregnant or planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
- If you are breast-feeding or planning to breast feed, ask your doctor before taking this medicine as it is excreted in breast milk and can cause side effects in babies
- This medicine is recommended for children under 8 years of age
- Caution in case of elderly people with ongoing treatment with diuretics
- Alcohol is not recommended while taking this medicine
- This medicine may affect your judgment or co-ordination. If this happens, do not drive and operate any machinery

- Sparfloxacin, Moxifloxacin, Erythromycin IV, Pentamidine
- Halofantrine
- Astemizole, Mizolastine
- Warfarin
- Ibruprofen, Diclofenac, Aspirin
- Clozapine
- Cyproheptadine
- Desmopressin, Carbamazepine and Oxcarbazepine
- Mefloquine, Chloroquine, Tramadol, Phenothiazines or Butyrophenones
- Flecainide, Propafenone, Nebivolol or Encainide
- Risperidone
- Imipramine, Desipramine and Amitriptyline
- Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you
- Do not chew or crush the medicine
- Swallow the medicine whole, with a drink of water
- The dose may depend on your age and disease condition
If you forget to take this medicine:
- If you forget to take your dose, do not worry
- Take your next dose the next day at the usual time
- Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten individual dose.
- Taking your medicine at the same time each day may help you to remember to take it regularly
If you stop taking this medicine:
- Keep taking your medicine until your doctor asks you to stop.
- Do not stop taking your medicine without asking your doctor first, even when you start to feel better
