Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic belonging to the fluoroquinolone family which is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It works by fighting and stopping the growth of bacteria in the body.
It is used to treat:
- A variety of bacterial infections
- Allergic to ciprofloxacin or to other quinolone drugs or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine
- Have ever had kidney problems
- Suffer from epilepsy or other neurological conditions
- Have a history of tendon problems during previous treatment with antibiotics
- Are diabetic
- Have myasthenia gravis
- Have heart problems
- You or a member of your family is known to have a deficiency in glucose-6- phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD)
- Have been diagnosed with an enlargement or “Bulge” of a large blood vessel
- Have experienced a previous episode of aortic dissection
- Have a family history of aortic aneurysm or aortic dissection or other risk factors or predisposing conditions
- Feel sudden, severe pain in your abdomen, chest or back
- It is preferable not to use this medicine if you are pregnant or planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
- This medicine is not recommended if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed because ciprofloxacin is excreted in breast milk and can be harmful for your child
- The risk of pain and swelling in the joints and inflammation or rupture of tendons may be high if you are above 60 years
- Drinking alcohol is not recommended while taking this medicine as they may affect the absorption of the active substance
- This medicine may make you feel less alert and cause neurological adverse events. If this happens do not drive or operate any machinery
Please inform your doctor in case you are taking any of the following medicines:
- Tizanidine
- Warfarin, Acenocoumarol, Phenprocoumon, Fluindione or other oral anti-coagulants
- Theophylline
- Phenytoin
- Probenecid
- Ropinirole
- Methotrexate
- Olanzapine
- Clozapine
- Metoclopramide
- Cyclosporin
- Quinidine, Hydroquinidine, Disopyramide, Amiodarone, Sotalol, Dofetilide, Ibutilide
- Zolpidem
- Pentoxifylline
- Caffeine
- Duloxetine
- Lidocaine
- Sildenafil
- Agomelatine
- Antacids
- Omeprazole
- Mineral supplements
- Sucralfate
- A polymeric phosphate binder
- Medicines or Supplements containing calcium, Magnesium, Aluminium or Iron
- Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you
- Swallow the medicines with plenty of fluid
- Do not chew the medicines
- Remember to drink plenty of fluids while you are taking this medicine
If you forget to take this medicine:
- Take the normal dose as soon as possible and then continue as prescribed. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, do not take the missed dose and continue as usual.
- Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose
If you stop taking this medicine:
- Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor tells you to do so
- Mycotic superinfections
- Eosinophilia
- Decreased appetite
- Psychomotor hyperactivity / agitation
- Headache, Dizziness, Sleep disorders, Taste disorders
- Vomiting, Gastrointestinal and abdominal pains, Dyspepsia, Flatulence
- Increase in transaminases, Increased bilirubin
- Rash, Pruritus, Urticaria
- Musculoskeletal pain (e.g. extremity pain, back pain, chest pain), Arthralgia
- Renal impairment
- Asthenia, Fever
- Increase in blood alkaline phosphatase
- Leukopenia, Anaemia, Neutropenia, Leukocytosis, Thrombocytopenia, Thrombocytaemia
- Allergic reaction, Allergic oedema / Angiooedema
- Hyperglycaemia, Hypoglycaemia, Hypoglycaemic coma
- Confusion and Disorientation, Anxiety reaction, Abnormal dreams, Depression, Hallucinations
- Par- and Dysaesthesia, Hypoaesthesia, Tremor, Seizure, Vertigo
- Visual disturbances
- Tinnitus, Hearing loss / Hearing impaired
- Tachycardia
- Vasodilatation, Hypotension, Syncope
- Dyspnoea
- Antibiotic associated colitis
- Hepatic impairment, Cholestatic icterus, Hepatitis
- Photosensitivity reactions
- Myalgia, Arthritis, Increased muscle tone and cramping
- Renal failure, Haematuria, Crystalluria, Tubulointerstitial nephritis
- Oedema, Sweating (hyperhidrosis)
- Increased amylase
- Haemolytic anaemia, Agranulocytosis, Pancytopenia, Bone marrow depression
- Anaphylactic reaction, Anaphylactic shock, Serum sickness like reaction
- Psychotic reactions
- Migraine, Disturbed coordination, Gait disturbance, Olfactory nerve disorders, Intracranial hypertension and pseudotumor cerebri
- Visual colour distortions
- Vasculitis
- Pancreatitis
- Liver necrosis
- Petechiae, Erythema multiforme, Erythema nodosum, Stevens- Johnson Syndrome, Toxic epidermal necrolysis
- Muscular weakness, Tendinitis, Tendon rupture, Exacerbation of symptoms of myasthenia gravis
- Protect from excess heat and light
- Keep this medicine out of reach of children
- Store at a room temperature of 15-25°C
