Phenytoin Sodium belongs to a group of medicines called anti-epileptic drugs which is used to control or prevent seizures. It works by slowing down impulses in the brain that cause seizures
It is used:
- To prevent and control seizures
- Allergic to phenytoin sodium, other hydantoin products or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
- Have or have ever have had liver disease
- Have or have ever had kidney disease
- Have or have ever had porphyria
- If you are pregnant or planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
- This medicine is not recommended if you are breast feeding or planning to breast feed as it passes into breast milk. Ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
- If you are older you may also need careful consideration and adjustment by your doctor
- Drinking a lot of alcohol can also affect the concentration of phenytoin in your blood
- This medicine may cause dizziness or drowsiness, especially during the first few weeks of treatment. If this happens, do not drive or operate tools or machinery

- Carbamazepine, Lamotrigine, Oxcarbazepine, Phenobarbital, Sodium valproate, Topiramate and Valproic acid, Ethosuximide and Vigabatrin
- Amphotericin B, Fluconazole, Iraconazole, Ketoconazole, Miconazole, Posaconazole and Voriconazole
- Chloramphenicol, Clarithromycin, Isoniazid, Rifampicin, Sulfonamides, Sulfadiazine, Sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim, Doxycycline, Ciprofloxacin, Efavirenz, Fosamprenavir, Indinavir, Iopinavir/ritonavir, Ritonavir and Saquinavir
- Omeprazole, Sucralfate, Cimetidine and some antacids
- Theophylline
- Aspirin and Steroids
- Chlordiazepoxide, Clozapine, Diazepam, Disulfiram, Fluoxetine, Methylphenidate, Paroxetine, Phenothiazines, Trazodone, Tricyclic antidepressants, Fluvoxamine, Quetiapine and Sertraline
- Tolbutamide
- Oestrogens, Oral contraceptives
- Ciclosporin and Tacrolimus
- Bleomycin, Capecitabine, Carboplatin, Cisplatin, Doxorubicin, Fluorouracil and Methotrexate
- Neuromuscular blockers, Methadone
- Antihelminthics
- Folic acid, Theophylline, St John’s Wort, Vitamin D
- Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you
- This medicine should be swallowed with a sufficient quantity of water
- This medicine can be taken before or after food
- Do not change your dose of this medicine without talking to your doctor
If you forget to take this medicine:
- If you forget to take a dose, skip the missed dose
- Take the next dose as usual
- Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose
If you stop taking this medicine:
- Do not stop taking this medicine unless told by your doctor
